Nanoindentation of Human Trabecular Bone – Tissue Mechanical Properties Compared to Standard Engineering Test Methods

چکیده

There are generally two types of bone tissue: trabecular and cortical. Cortical bone is the more dense tissue found on the surface of bones and trabecular bone is a highly porous structure that fills the proximal and distal ends of all long bones (e.g. femur or tibia) and is also present as a filler in other bones (e.g. in vertebral bodies). While at themolecular level both the cortical and trabecular bone are made of the same constituents, their overall mechanical properties are quite different.

Fabrication of Porous Hydroxyapatite-Gelatin Composite Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering

Background: engineering new bone tissue with cells and a synthetic extracellular matrix represents a new approach for the regeneration of mineralized tissues compared with the transplantation of bone (autografts or allografts). Methods: in this study, to mimic the mineral and organic component of natural bone, hydroxapatite (HA) and gelatin (GEL) composite scaffolds were prepared. The raw mater...

Precision of nanoindentation protocols for measurement of viscoelasticity in cortical and trabecular bone.

Nanoindentation has recently gained attention as a characterization technique for mechanical properties of biological tissues, such as bone, on the sub-micron level. However, optimal methods to characterize viscoelastic properties of bones are yet to be established. This study aimed to compare the time-dependent viscoelastic properties of bone tissue obtained with different nanoindentation meth...

Fabrication of Porous Hydroxyapatite-Gelatin Scaffolds Crosslinked by Glutaraldehyde for Bone Tissue Engineering

In this study, to mimic the mineral and organic components of natural bone, hydroxyapatite[HA] and gelatin[GEL] composite scaffolds were prepared using the solvent-casting method combined with a freeze drying process. Glutaraldehyde[GA] was used as a cross linking agent and sodium bisulfite was used as an excess GA discharger. Using this technique, it is possible to produce scaffolds with mecha...

A combined atomic force microscopy and nanoindentation technique to investigate the elastic properties of bone structural units.

To our knowledge, this study applied for the first time a recently developed combination of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and nanoindentation on trabecular and compact bone tissue. The major aim was to check the advantage of the available AFM-mode over the conventionally used optical microscope. First, we investigated if removal of the water content helped to prevent enzymatic degradation of th...
